Answer to Question #66926 in Inorganic Chemistry for queue

Question #66926
What if I have dissolved 10g of HA in propanol and I want to adjust pH by adding nitric acid, then will the particles react with acid in this case? I have a doubt that it might depend on the mass of particle.

HA will react with HNO3 only in the case when both acids are mixed together without propanol. The result will depend on which acid is stronger i.e. HA + HNO3 = A- + NO2+ + H2O (HNO3 is weaker) or HA + HNO3 = H2A+ + NO3-. In the propanol liquid medium pH of both acids will be lower to that in water environment.
