Answer to Question #175809 in General Chemistry for Nicole

Question #175809

GUIDE QUESTIONS

Analysis of data : Answer the following question to compare your inference vs. the actual results of the activity

a. When you drop granules of coffee into water, what happens to both substance?

b. when you drop powdered coffee into water, what happen to both substance?

c. when you drop dish washing liquid on water, what happen to both substance?

d.when you drop chunk of dish washing on water, what happen to both substance?

Conclusion

How will you explain the properties of liquid ( water, dish washing liquid) and solids (coffee granules, coffee powder, dish washing paste) using the kinetic molecular model?

a) When you mix water and coffee, the water will dissolve the different flavor compounds in coffee.

b) The same happens when you put coffee granules or powder into hot water. The coffee granules are made from particles of a substance which is brown. When coffee dissolves it does not stop being brown.

c) When detergent is added to water, it decreases the surface tension of the water. Compounds that lower water's surface tension are called surfactants, which work by separating the water molecules from one another.

d) It is attracted to both water and oil molecules. Detergent grabs onto both types of molecules causing oil droplets to be suspended in the water. When you shake the jar the detergent molecules adhere the water and oil together forming an emulsion.

According to the kinetic-molecular theory, liquids are able to evaporate, particles in a liquid are moving in a wide range of speeds. Like billiard-balls, they bump into each other, and some gain kinetic energy while others lose it.
