Why do we need to measure extremely small intervals of time?

This may be necessary in some experiments and laboratory works because they deal with phenomena that last for a very short time and the property measured for a very long time will not give any useful information.

For example, imagine that we measure the time of contact between a ball thrown from some height and a surface. The interaction between the ball and surface is quick, and long time measurement will not work in this situation.
