Question #83984
A copper calorimeter has mass of 100g .the calorimeter contains water of mass 500g at a temperature of 20degree celcius how much steam must be condensed into water if the mixture has a final temperature of 50degree celcius.. assume specific heat of copper is 420j/kg/c and of water is 4186j/kg/c and latent heat of condensation of steam is 2.26*10^6

Calculate the heat stored in water by the relation as follows:

Q_W=M_W×C_(P_W )×∆T

Here,M_W is the mass of water , C_(P_W ) is the specific heat of water and ∆T is the temperature difference.

Substitute 0.5 kg for M_W , 4186j/kg/c for C_(P_W ) and 30 for ∆T.

Q_W=(0.5 kg)×(((4186 j)/kg)/c)×(30)

Q_W=62970 j

Calculate the heat in calorimeter by the relation as follows:

Q_C=M_C×C_(C_W )×∆T

Here,M_C is the mass of water , C_(C_W ) is the specific heat of water and ∆T is the temperature difference.

Substitute 0.1 kg for M_W , 420 j/kg/c for C_(P_W ) and 30 for ∆T.

Q_C=(0.1 kg)×(((420 j)/kg)/c)×(30)

Q_C=1260 j

Calculate the mass of steam required by the relation as follows:

M_S=(Q_W-Q_C)/L

Substitute 62970 j for Q_W , 1260 j for Q_C and 2.26×〖10〗^6 for L.

M_S=(62970-1260)/(2.26×〖10〗^6 )

M_S=0.0027 kg=2.7 grams
