When an object experiences a circular motion, the velocity vector changes direction which generates an acceleration that is directed towards the center of the circle, which is the centripetal acceleration, and where an acceleration occurs, there must be a force (Second Law of Newton), therefore the only force considered, must be the tension and the direction is indicated in the diagram.
