This happens because of the inertia force, which is "the property of matter by which it retains its state of rest or its velocity along a straight line so long as it is not acted upon by an external force". This means that if something is moving it will keep its velocity or movement the same and keep going even if the thing it is in stops, like a car slamming on its brakes and the passengers jerking forward.
