Yes, we can.
In electronics, a shunt is a device which allows electric current to pass around another point in the circuit, but we can turn on successively resistor. From Ohm's law:
I=U/R,
where R it's resistance of circuit, if we turn on resistor R=r we have I=U/(R+r) we can see, that this current is lower. In this way, we decrease the range of ammeter.
