An electric power line carries a strong current of 1.95 × 103 A in the lovely city of
Anchorage, Alaska. The line is parallel to the ground and heading to the North (also
the direction of the electric current), but since the Earth is a sphere it means that
the Earth’s magnetic field of 55 µT is oriented at an angle of 61◦
relative to the wire
(see figure). Determine the force on a 20.0 m segment of the power line, and use the
right-hand rule to determine its direction.
