1. A recent study examined the effect of diet cola consumption on calcium levels in healthy adult
women. It is possible that diet cola leaches calcium out of the body. To investigate this, 16
healthy adult women were assigned to drink either 750 ml of diet cola or 750 ml of water and
then asked to collect their urine for 3 hours. The calcium content of the urine was recorded.
The results appear below, in mg.

(a) Use the results to investigate whether or not the mean amount of calcium lost for women
who drink cola is the same as that for women who drink water. In particular

i. Give the null hypothesis, H0.

ii. Give the alternative, H1. Should this be one- or two-sided? Give a reason for your
answer.
iii. Give the most appropriate test statistic to test H0 against H1. Be sure to check that
the assumptions are satis ed for the test that you use.
