# Answer to Question #2377 in Geometry for Jess Winebrenner

Question #2377

I am taking a geometry class and I am trying to find the area of a triangle and the height is a square root and the base is a whole number; will I get a decimal or a whole number for the area?

Expert's answer

If the square root is irrational, there is no any number& multiplying by it gives us the whole number; if the square root is rational, it can be represented as a fraction a/b, so we can choose the base equal to b, and the area hb/2 would be a whole number.
