-23 is a real number because there exist -1/23 such that -1/23 is the multiplicative inverse of -23. Also, there exist 23 such that 23 is the additive inverse of -23. All of this boils from the fact that the set of real numbers is a field. -23 is a rational number because it can be expressed in the form -23/1.-23 is an integer because it isthe negative of the natural number 23. This is because the integers are constructed fromthe union of the negative of the natural numbers, zero and the natural numbers; the natural numbers as defined here do not include zero.

In the real number system -23 is real numbers because real numbers are all the numbers on the numberline . It is rational numbers that can be express as quotient form such as (-1, 0 1) fractions (1/4, .75 ) and it is also and integers in the sense that it can be written without fractional exponent. for example ...-3,-2,-1, 0, 1,2,...
