Well, if you're asking about parabolas, or quadratic functions of the form y=ax^2+bx+c, or you mean quadratic equations ax^2+bx+c=0, then expression b^2-4ac is called the determinant. In case of positive determinant b^2-4ac>0 quadratic equation has two distinct real roots, corresponding parabola has two interceptions with x-axis.
