Ubuntu is a Nguni Bantu term meaning "humanity." The typical use of the word, when considering it as a justice topic, focuses on the individual and their place among the social group. As an example, in Zulu culture, the word is often used to define the individual as part of the tribe or social order. Applying Ubuntu to victims of a “system” is as likely as trying to apply christianity, Islam or Buddhism to any given victim. Because of the diversity of victims, the extent of injury, the age, culture and so many other factors, I see little or no special potential of one over the other. Because of the origin in African culture, perhaps those victims who related to their African roots my take solace there.
