The sun emits light toward the Earth. This lights warms up our planet. The warm planet emits this heat back to the space. However, the atmosphere that consists of air serves as an insulator that prevents the Earth from cooling. The density of air and, thus, its insulating efficiency is greater in lowlands. In highlands, the density of air is smaller, its insulating efficiency is weaker, and for heat it is easier to leave the planet.
