Answer to Question #14010 in Engineering for Rob Llewellyn

Question #14010
The winter heating requirement of a small rural building is about 5 kW. This could
be provided by either electric heaters or liquefied propane gas (LPG) heaters.
Using the following assumptions, show that the CO2 released per hour by the gas
heater would be about a third of that due to electric heating.

Assumptions
 The gas heater operates at a gas-to-useful heat efficiency of 66%.
 The combustion of propane releases 65 grams of CO2 per MJ of heat
produced.
 The electricity is considered 100% useful in heating the building.
 The electricity is generated in a coal-fired power station with an overall coalto-
delivered electricity efficiency of 30%.
 The combustion of coal releases 88 grams of CO2 per MJ of heat produced.
