Answer to Question #128220 in Mechanical Engineering for Vaibhav kate

Question #128220
A carbon steel (K = 54 W/m – k) pipe of OD 6 cm and 3 mm thick is carrying steam at 3000
c
is to be insulated to reduce heat losses. The heat transfer coefficient between steam and the
pipe surface is 120 W/m2
-k. The outer surface of the pipe may be assumed to be at 3000
c. It is
desired to use 1 cm thick asbestos (K = 0.1105 W/m – k) and 1 cm glass wool (K = 0.038 W/m
– k) insulation. The atmospheric air is at 300
c and the film coefficient between insulating layer
and air is 10 W/m2
-k. Determine which insulating material is to be used as first layer of
insulation? Why?
