The computer's fundamental function is performed in an area of the machine that humans cannot see, a control center that translates data input to information output. The central processing unit (CPU) is a very complicated and vast piece of electrical circuitry that processes stored program instructions. A central processing unit is required for all computers, large and small. As seen in Figure 1, the central processing unit is divided into two parts: the control unit and the arithmetic/logic unit. Each component has a specific purpose.

Before delving into the control and arithmetic/logic units, we must first address data storage and its link to the central processing unit. Primary storage and secondary storage are the two forms of storage used by computers. The CPU has a strong relationship with primary storage, often known as main memory, and refers to it for both instructions and data. As a result, this section of the reading will focus on memory in the context of the central processing unit. Memory, on the other hand, is not technically a component of the CPU.
