Peripheral devices are input or output devices that are connected to a computer. These devices, which are regarded a components of a computer system, are intended to read information into or out of the memory unit in response to an instruction from the CPU. These devices are also referred to as peripherals.

Keyboards, display units, and printers are examples of common peripheral devices.

Peripherals are classified into three types:

Input peripherals: This allows the computer to receive user input from the outside environment. Keyboard, mouse, and so forth.

Output peripherals: These devices allow information to be output from the computer to the outside world. As an example, consider a printer or a monitor.

Input-Output peripherals: Allows both input (from the outside world to the computer) and output (from the computer to the outside world). Touch screen, for example.
