Differential protection is one of the most essential types of protection in a power system. It is used to protect electrical equipment from internal faults such as internal winding short circuits, bus bar phase to phase short circuits, inter-turn shorts, winding punctures, and so on.

Instrument transformers include current transformers, voltage transformers, and potential transformers. Instrument transformers reduce high voltage or current values to tiny, standardized values that can be handled by measuring instruments and protection relays. Instrument transformers insulate measurement and protection circuits from the primary system's high voltage. A current transformer produces a secondary current that is precisely proportionate to the original current. The current transformer adds no load to the primary circuit.
