No , Transformers doesn't work on DC.


Transformers are static devices which works on the principle of mutual induction.


According to Faradays law of electromagnetic induction the emf induced is proportional to rate of change of flux.Hence there should be varying flux linkage on turns for emf to induce.


In machines like generator it is achieved by external rotation of rotor . But transformers are static. So varying flux linkages is achieved only with Continuously varying AC voltage.


If DC is applied, initially due to inductive rise you can see a transformed voltage. Later due to very small resistance high current flows through the coil to damage it.

Also DC can run the core to deep saturation.
