• The flow of fluid through the reactor in the PFR is orderly, with no element of fluid overtaking or combining with any other element ahead or behind. In fact, fluid lateral mixing may occur in a plug flow reactor.

• The ideal steady-state flow reactor is the mixed reactor, the back mix reactor, or the ideal stirred tank reactor. It is a reactor in which the ingredients are thoroughly mixed and uniformly distributed. As a result, the exit stream from this reactor has the same composition as the reactor fluid.
