During sunset, the light rays enter the atmosphere at the lower angle and thus, have to pass larger distance before they reach Earth surface. As a result, more molecules and particles present in the atmosphere are encountered by the light rays, and blue and violet waves are filtered out. The only wavelengths, which can penetrate are orange, yellow, ad red. They determine the observed color of sunset.
