Pour the mixture into hot water.

Stir water. The sugar will dissolve readily but sand will not. Pour through a fine mesh such as a sieve into another container. The sand will be at the sieve and the sugar solution will be as a liquid in the bottom container. Evaporate the water from sugar solution until sugar is left behind only.
