Answer to Question #18441 in Physical Chemistry for Diana

Question #18441
An initial step in the production of iron in a blast furnace involves the conversion of iron (iii) oxide and carbon monoxide into iron (ii,iii) oxide and carbon dioxide.Calculate the enthalpy of this reaction using standard molar enthalpies of formation.
Expert's answer
3Fe2O3(s) + CO(g) → 2Fe3O4(s) + CO2(g)
∆H = ∑nH°f(products) - ∑nH°f(reactants)
∆H = 2(-118.4 kj/mol) - 393.5 kj/mol - (3(-824.2 kjmol)- 110.5 kj/mol) = 47.2 kJ
