What substances combined create the effect of a beaker filled with liquid that appears to be smoking or steaming as in old horror flicks such as one set in Frankensteins laboratory? Is it the same as a fog machine?

liquid water and liquid nitrogen will give this effect, concentrated HCl or HNO₃⁺ some concentrated alkali can give this effect too.
