Answer to Question #26322 in Other Chemistry for Raven

Question #26322
What is the pH of a 0.017 M solution of HCl
Expert's answer
pH scale is used to have better appreciation of the value of the hydrogen ion concentration where:

pH = - log [H+]

The dissociation equation for HCl is next:

HCl <=> H+ + Cl-
The concentration of H+ is the same that HCl concentration. This conclusion could be made from upper equation.

[H+]=[HCl]= 0.017 M

pH = - log [H+]= - log [0.017] =1.77
