Answer to Question #63568 in Organic Chemistry for Susan Guido

Question #63568
Can you explain this answer please esp sp sp2 sp3 hybridization thank you
CH2 = (double line) CH - (single line) CH2 - (single line) CH2 - (single line) C (triple line) CH
Trigonal planar trigonal planar tetrahedral tetrahedral linear linear

The top two carbon atoms that share the double bond each have three groups bonded to them. They have sp2 hybridization, therefore have a trigonal planar geometery. The next two carbon atoms each have four groups bonded to them (two H atoms and two C atoms). They have sp3 hybridization, therefore have tetrahedral geometery. The bottom two carbon atoms each have two groups bonded to them. They have sp hybridization, therefore they have linear geometery
