1. Give a detailed step by step mechanism for the formation of dimesitylmethane
from mesitylene and formaldehyde.
2. The intermediate benzylic carbocation is stabilized by resonance. Draw the
contributing resonance structures.
3. How much formic acid is consumed in this reaction?

We used 0.75g of paraformaldehyde, 4.5mL of 95% formic acid, 10.0 mLof mesitylene.
Came out wit 2.09g crude and 1.53g pure.
