For n = 3, there are (l = 0, 1…n-1) three possible values of l: 0, 1, 2. These are the sub shells, termed as atomic orbitals within each energy level.

These numbers correspond to sp and d  orbitals. For each class of sub shell, s has 1 atomic Orbital, p has 3 and d has 5. Therefore, for n= 3, there are a total of (1 + 3 + 5) 9 atomic Orbitals.

n= 3, there are 18 molecular orbital(9 bonding + 9 anti bonding).

For n = 5, there are (l = 0, 1, 2, 3,…n-1) four possible values of l: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4. These are the sub shells, termed as atomic orbitals within each energy level.

These numbers correspond to spdf, and g orbitals. For each class of sub shell, s has 1 atomic Orbital, p has 3, d has 5, f has 7, g has 9. Therefore, for n= 5, there are a total of (1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 9) 25 Atomic Orbitals.

n= 5, there are 50 molecular orbital(25 bonding + 25 anti bonding).
