Element X is Magnesium. Element Y is Chlorine. An atom of Magnesium ionizes giving its 2 electrons to atoms of Chlorine. An atom of Chlorine takes an electron from Magnesium and goes to configuration of 2,8,8. Then the ion of Magnesium and the ion of Chlorine form ionic bonding(electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions).
