Answer to Question #19903 in Inorganic Chemistry for Ann Vincent

Question #19903
1. A vessel with a tiny hole in its wall is filled with oxygen (O2) to a pressure of 1 atm at 25oC. In a one-minute period, 3.25g of oxygen effuse out through the hole into a vacuum. The vessel is evacuated and filled with an unknown gas at the same pressure and temperature. In this case, only 1.96g of the unknown gas effuse out in one minute. n = m/Mw,so n(O2) = 3.25/32 = 0.1015 mol, and it isequivalent to the n of the unknown gas, if n = m/Mw =>
Mw = m/n = 1.96/0.1015 = 19.310
