Answer to Question #158818 in Inorganic Chemistry for james

Question #158818
  1. How scandium, a transition metal forms an ion with a noble gas structure.
  2.  How the effective nuclear charge changes as you move from left to right across the periodic table and why?
  3. The information that can obtained from a symbol of an element in the periodic table
Expert's answer

1. When scandium donates three electrons from the outer state orbitals then it forms Sc3+ and its electron configuration  is equal to the electron configuration  of Argon which is a noble gas. Hence scandium forms a tri positive ion with a noble gas structure

2. the effective nuclear change  of an atom increases as the number of protons in an atom increases. Therefore as we go from left to right on the periodic table, the effective nuclear charge of an atom increases in strength and holds the outer electrons closer and tighter to the nucleus

3. Atomic number and atomic weight
