Higher value of reduction potential of Cu2+/Cu means that the Ni spatula cannot be used to stir the CuSO4 solution because Ni reacts with CuSO4 chemically. In this case Nickel as more active metal will displace less active Copper from its salt according to the reaction: CuSO4(aq)+Ni(s) --> NiSO4(aq)+Cu(s).
