Answer to Question #56205 in General Chemistry for jocelyn

Question #56205
in step 5 of the procedure you were told to add between 25-50ml of distilled water, but that the actual volume was not important, explain why the volume of water you ass in this step is not important.
Expert's answer
The volume of water added to aliquot in acid-base titration does not matter, as it does not change the quantity of analyte in the flask. Value of concentration is not so important, because you have measured precisely the volume of mother solution, concentration of which is to be determined by titration. Aliquot is diluted in Erlenmeyer flask to increase the volume of solution that is important to prevent significant fluctuations of temperature over neutralization process and make equivalence point more pronounced.
