Answer to Question #177804 in General Chemistry for Saira

Question #177804

We have sigma star and pi star orbitals corresponding to the sigma and pi orbitals, respectively . Why don't we have n star orbital corresponding to n orbital.

Expert's answer

As per molecular orbital theory atomic orbital having same energy combines to form a molecular orbital which having nearly same energy.

During this process wave function of atomic orbital combines algebrically during addition of wave function we get bonding atomic orbital and during subtraction we get anti bonding atomic orbital which is denoted by *

So, we know that atoms have four type of orbitals s,p,d,f so we get orbitals of that type only and during combination two types of bond formed i.e. \sigmaσ or π so we get antibonding of only that type.
