Answer to Question #176358 in General Chemistry for Earl

Question #176358

WHAT IS IN VAPOR PRESSURE?

- Vapor pressure is a liquid property related to evaporation. In the liquid ( or any substance) the molecules have a distribution of kinetic energies related to the temperature of the system. Because this is a distribution there will always be a few molecules that have enough kinetic energy to overcome the attractive potential energy of the other container, these molecules will wander off (diffuse) into the room and out into the atmosphere. Eventually all the liquid will evaporate.

Cotton ball with water and cotton ball with acetone when exposed in air, Acetone has the higher evaporation rate as compared to the water. Hence the cotton with acetone evaporates faster.

Cotton ball with water and cotton ball with acetone when exposed in heat, We know acetone is inflammable whereas water is not. Hence, cotton with acetone when heated catches fire whereas the cotton with water does not.
