Question #172532

Effect of adding AgNO3: Le Chatelier’s Principle Lab

  1. In a moment, you will be adding AgNO3 to your reaction system. Adding AgNO3 should affect the concentration of which species in the equilibrium reaction? Would it increase or decrease the concentration?
  2. According to Le Chatelier’s principle, predict which way the reaction should shift (left or right).
  3. Now to test your prediction – to test tube #3, add several drops of 0.1M AgNO3 solution.
  4. What do you observe happening? Report any color changes or other changes you observe.

1. Adding AgNO3 affects the concentration of Cl- ions. It decreased the concentration of Cl- ions due to the formation of AgCl precipitate.

2. The equilibrium position will shift to the left due to the fact that Cl-ions are continually being removed to form AgCl precipitate

3. By adding 0.1M of AgCl, a large portion of white precipitate is produced with a pink supernatant.
