Answer to Question #172273 in General Chemistry for sdfda

Question #172273
  1. Effect of adding NH4SCN
  2. In a moment, you will be adding NH4SCN to your reaction system. Adding NH4SCN should affect the concentration of which species in the equilibrium reaction?
  3. Should this speed up the forward reaction or the reverse reaction?
  4. According to Le Chatelier’s principle, predict which way the reaction should shift (left or right)
  5. Now to test your prediction – to test tube #2, add a few crystals of solid NH4SCN.
  6. What do you observe happening? Report any color changes or other changes you observe.

1.The salt is added to the hot solution and the gummy solid that forms is strained off from the liquid.

2.Adding sodium hydroxide (NaOH) will also affect the position of the equilibrium. While neither sodium ions (Na +) or hydroxide ions (OH -) are present on either side.

3.The reaction is in equilibrium and the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction.

4.Will shift the equilibrium to the right, towards the side of the products.

5.The hydroxide ions will remove H + ions

6.The equilibrium will shift to the right hand side to replace the hydrogen ions that were removed.
