Why prokaryotes are not considered to have living choromosomes?

Chromosome is a complex of DNA with specific proteins, called histones. Such comlpexes are present in eukaryotes only. Although nucleoid of prokaryotes is referred to as chromosome sometimes, it is not actually a chromosome, because it lacks histones.
