The respiratory system of birds is unique because it facilities efficient exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen via continuous unidirectional airflow. The advantage of this kind of system is that a breath of oxygen rich inhaled air remains in the respiratory system for two complete inhalation and exhalation cycles before it is spent and exhaled out of the body . Furthermore, fresh air passes over the gas exchange surfaces during both inhalation and exhalation enabling the bird experience a near continuous state of gas exchange within the lungs. The circulatory adaptation of birds is that they have special air sacs and also they have hallow bones that allow these gases flow more easily.
