Under normal conditions stomach walls are covered with mucus secreted by mucous cells found in the gastric glands. Mucus protects the stomach from the gastric juice, secreted by the gastric glands too. The main function of acidic gastric juice, which contains proteolytic enzymes, is to digest food. In the case mucus is not produced or produced at inappropriate level, gastric juice can damage the stomach walls.
