Aerobic respiration is associated with the use of oxygen and complete oxidation of glucose while anaerobic respiration does not require oxygen and results in the oxidation of glucose to lactate (i.e., animals) or ethanol (i.e., yeasts).

Aerobic respiration:

C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6CO2 + 6H2O

Anaerobic respiration:

C6H12O6 = 2C3H3O6 + 2H2O
