Accumulation of water leads to swelling and a softening of a seed’s coat. The processes activate cell respiration, protein synthesis and metabolism of food stores. Next, cell division and elongation occur, pushing out the seed’s root and radicle allowing water absorption. Then, the shoot comes from the seed and consists of the cotyledons, hypocotyl and epicotyl that give the rise of leaves able to photosynthesize.
