Dead zones contain less oxygen in the water. As a result, The input no longer present is oxygen and the output no longer made is ATP. The output wouldn’t be made because lack of oxygen suppresses oxidative phosphorylation in cells and less ATP is produced in mitochondria though carbon dioxide and law amounts of ATP are formed due to anaerobic oxidation of glucose.
