Mast cells are immune cells that are important for the development of inflammatory processes. In particular, activation of mast cells results in the release of inflammatory mediators from the mast cell granules (i.e., histamine and heparin). This activation occurs due to the binding of antigens to immunoglobulins G that are attached to mast cells. As a result, the release of the mediators causes the development of symptoms of allergy and hypersensitivity.
