Upregulation is the mechanism by which a cell responds to an external stimulus by reducing the amount of a cellular component, such as RNA or protein.


The process of transcription involves copying the DNA sequence of a gene into an RNA molecule. This is a crucial step in making a protein using information from a gene. Reduced transcription factors prohibit some DNA segments from being transcribed. When transcription factors are reduced a particular cell reacts by introducing mechanisms to avail and facilitate DNA being transcribed.


Most transcription factors use either one or another of two opposing mechanisms to regulate transcription: histone acetyltransferase activity and acetylates histone proteins, which weakens the association of DNA with histones. This make the DNA more accessible to transcription, thereby up-regulating transcription.
