Despite the fact that people can have some types of the disease, no direct dog-to-human transmission has yet been documented, amongst most veterinarians who have treated hundreds of dogs with leishmaniasis. There is no risk of transmission when the condition is handled at low levels, and the canine strain of the disease is distinct from the strain that infects humans in other parts of the world. The great majority of canine cases are infected directly via sandfly bites, and direct canine to canine transmission is extremely rare.
