Answer to Question #204650 in Microbiology for Vibha

Question #204650

1) Will the substrate bind to the active site of enzyme, if that enzyme is in solid state?

2) As a specific substrate binds to the active site of enzyme, so does the active is attracting/ absorbing that specific substrate only....?

3) If the shape of an enzyme is changed, so will it never function or never bind to any substrate....?

1)This adjustment of the enzyme to snugly fit the substrate is called induced fit. Illustration of the induced fit model of enzyme catalysis. As a substrate binds to the active site, the active site changes shape a little, grasping the substrate more tightly and preparing to catalyze the reaction.

2)A substrate enters the active site of the enzyme. This forms the enzyme-substrate complex. The reaction then occurs, converting the substrate into products and forming an enzyme products complex. The products then leave the active site of the enzyme.

3)If the enzyme changes shape, the active site may no longer bind to the appropriate substrate and the rate of reaction will decrease. Dramatic changes to the temperature and pH will eventually cause enzymes to denature.
