Microorganisms which are also called as microbes are microscopic organisms that exist as unicellular , multi-cellular or cell clusters.

They are categorized into five major groups:

a) Bacteria

b) Fungi: yeasts and molds

c) Viruses

d) Protozoa

e) Algae


a) Bacteria: Bacteria are the unicellular microorganisms and their cells are described as prokaryotic (which means their cells lack nucleus).


b) Fungi:

Yeasts are typically unicellular, microscopic, eukaryotic fungi that reproduce asexually by budding.

Molds are typically filamentous, eukaryotic fungi that reproduce by producing asexual reproductive spores.


c) Viruses:

Viruses are the non-cellular particles that can only replicate inside a living host cell. They consist of a nucleic acid core (DNA or RNA) surrounded by a protein coat.


d) Protozoa:

Protozoa are unicellular eukaryotic organisms and special thing about them is that they lack cell wall. They make up the largest group of organisms in the world in terms of numbers, biomass, and diversity.


e) Algae:

They are unicellular or multicellular eukaryotes which can perform photosynthesis. They generally live in water, damp soil, and rocks and produce oxygen and carbohydrates used by other organisms
