The withdrawal reflex occurs when stepping on a sharp object. The flexors in the withdrawing limb contract(pull away) and the extensors relax, while in the other limb, the opposite occurs(to give support to body)

It is happened in the following way :

  • - receptor perceives the stimulus. A sensory nerve carries this message from receptor to spinal cord.
  • - The  associative neurons of the spinal cord transmit the impulse from afferent neurons to efferent neurons.
  •  - The motor nerve carries this message from the spinal cord to the muscles that show response.
